I met my wife on a warm evening in May of 2010, at a movies and smoothies party in a second floor apartment belonging to a mutual friend. I was beardless. So was she. It didn’t stop us hitting it off.
I remember that moment vividly, and I’d bet that if you thought back to when you met your own person you’d have it too. What they were wearing. Possibly the first thing one of you said. Their first smile. Exactly where you were standing when it all happened.
Forever, Specifically
Kelsey and Jacob may not remember their first meeting, because it was rather a long time ago. Ask their family and friends and you’ll be told the two of them have been together “forever.”
Forever being a long time, I dug a bit at our first meeting, and learned that it meant the first day of class in third grade. Do they remember the moment as vividly as I remember mine? Probably not. But they’ve known each other three times as long.
The Ranch
They met in a classroom, but the relationship grew outside one. When I asked what they enjoy doing together, nearly every answer started with some version of “we go to Kelsey’s family ranch in Spicewood.”
The property sits in the hill country, surrounded by tall grasses, prickly pear, lakes, rivers and cows. It is a bit of heaven on earth. And the more I asked about their relationship, the more I realised the ranch was their connecting point for all of their key moments growing up together: hunting, fishing, riding horses, raising animals.
The Pig Barn
When it came time to propose, somewhere in the second half of forever, Jacob lured Kelsey to the pig barn on the ranch with a story about an injured animal that needed her help.
Instead of a frightened rabbit she found the barn fully decorated with moments from their life together.
They set the date for a year later, right next to that same barn.
Filming It
As we came up to the day, Rachel and I realised we had to feature the ranch itself. The oak trees, the long grass moving in the breeze, the cacti and the rolling clouds were not a backdrop. They were part of the relationship too.
